Riverview Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame Board

Kathy Chamberlain is a native Floridian living most of her life in Sarasota.  Her dedication to Riverview started when she served for over a decade as the first Riverview High School Foundation Coordinator. While serving in this important position, Kathy was appointed to the original committee that brought the nationally recognized Renaissance Program to RHS. The Renaissance program was designed to celebrate academic achievement throughout the entire student body.  While ushering in new programs, she maintained The First Among Equals Program highlighting the top academic seniors along with superlative underclassmen, teacher travel, and scholarships. Kathy was also one of the faculty members who helped bring the International Baccalaureate Program to Riverview.  She has served on principal nominating committees, SAC committees, Riverview High School Accreditation committees, fund raising golf tournaments and many other worthwhile endeavors.
     For over 20 years Kathy has dedicated her life to bringing mentors to students throughout Sarasota County Schools through various programs. With Kathy's dedication and leadership, Sarasota County citizens are now aware of just how student's lives are changed by having a consistent positive adult role in their lives. Currently Kathy is the Executive Director of Faces of Accomplishment Mentoring Program.
     She has co-chaired Church of the Palms Presbyterian's year long 50th anniversary in 2007.  She served as a deacon and Elder at the church.  Kathy was the PTO President at Wilkinson Elementary for several years while her two children attended the school.
     Kathy has been happily married to Fred Chamberlain for 47 years.  She is the mother of two children, Kelly who graduated from Pine View and Daniel who graduated from RHS.  She is the proud grandmother of 5 amazing grandchildren.

Scott Dennis is a proud Riverview High School graduate (class of 1980) where he played trumpet in the Kiltie Band and lettered in golf. After graduating from the University of Florida, Scott began a 34 year broadcasting career at ABC7 in Sarasota. During his first dozen years at the TV station, Scott covered local sports, including countless RHS games! In 1998, Scott moved to the news department, where he traveled to Cuba for a special weeklong report, flew with the Navy’s Blue Angels, and anchored ABC7’s non-stop coverage of the busy 2004 hurricane season, and Hurricane Irma in 2017.

     Scott is a member of the Riverview High School Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame and the Riverview H.S. Athletic Hall of Fame. Over the years, he has mentored Riverview students, narrated RHS Planetarium’s “Stars to Starfish” program, and emceed dozens of events, including Mr. Riverview, Lady Ram, Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremonies, and the school’s 60th anniversary celebration. He currently serves on the Riverview Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame Board. 

     Having grown up in Sarasota, Scott embraced the opportunity to give back to a community that has provided so many opportunities to him. He is a former Big Brother, volunteer of the year at Fruitville Elementary School, and offered his time to the Sarasota County School District’s volunteer program, the American Heart Association, Sarasota Coalition on Substance Abuse and Easter Seals Southwest Florida. 

     Scott lives in Sarasota with his wife Gilda. Their daughter Reese is a 2021 Riverview IB graduate.

 

Pam Morey Hart, Ph.D. Dr. Pam Hart is a life-long resident of Sarasota, Florida. She and her sons graduated from Riverview High School. Her undergraduate degree is from the University of Florida. She attained her Master’s and Ph.D. degrees from the University of South Florida. Her educational career focused on K-12 education as a teacher and administrator; both as a high school and district administrator. She was the Director of H.E.A.R.T. Tutoring Center for twenty-five years. Pam worked with the Florida Department of Education as an evaluator of the Professional Development Evaluation System in various school districts in Florida.

In addition to her educational career, Pam was co-owner of retail Hallmark stores and a licensed real estate agent. 

 

Dr. Hart is an active volunteer in the community. She has served as President of Altrusa Club of business women, Program Coordinator of PALS (Partnership and Alliances Linking Schools) at Gulf Gate Elementary, and later as President and Vice-President of TEAM UP Volunteer & Business Partnership with Sarasota Public Schools. Pam has served as Board Chair and Personnel Chair in her church. Dr. Hart is a member of the Junior League of Sarasota that supports numerous community projects. She currently serves on the Riverview High School Distinguished Alumni Board Hall of Fame and is one of the founding members of PEN Sarasota (Public Education Network).

 

As a retiree, Pam volunteers her time tutoring children, mentoring high school students, visiting her family and grandchildren in Virginia and traveling to new destinations.

Josephine Ivey retired from Riverview High School in 2013.  She served as a Spanish teacher, Foreign Language Coordinator, Activities Director, Championship Academy Leader and the Varsity Cheerleading Coach during her 35 years at Riverview.  She was Riverview High School Teacher of the Year in 1995 and the National High School Cheerleading Coach of the Year in 2007.  Her cheerleaders received local, state and national recognition. In 1995 her squad finished 15th at the NCA National High School Cheerleading Competitions in Dallas, Texas. In 1998 her team placed 9th at the competition in Dallas. She was inducted into the Riverview Athletic Hall of Fame in 2011.
     Josephine's daughter, Alisa Ivey Westberry, and son, William "B.J." Ivey are both graduates of Riverview High School. Alisa is Vice President, Premier Banker, with BMO Harris in Sarasota.  Alisa has been actively involved in community service serving on the Board of Junior Achievement and on several committees for Forty Carrots in Sarasota. Presently she serves on the Board of Trustees at the South Florida Museum in Bradenton.. B.J. returned to Riverview High School after his college graduation and has continued the Ivey excellence in teaching and coaching.  B.J.teaches AP Psychology. In his ten years as the boys varsity basketball coach the team has earned six district championships, three runner up district championships, an elite 8 appearance, a regional championship and in 2016 was the Class 8A State Runner up.  B.J. was named  FBCA Florida 8A Coach of the Year in 2016.  He was selected Sarasota County Teacher of the Year in 2017.
     Before retirement, Josephine dedicated her time towards establishing a Riverview High School "Archive Room" in which to house and display Riverview's legacy of excellence in academics, athletic and extracurricular activities. Students, staff, community members and alumni are welcome to visit the Archive Room to view and celebrate Riverview's rich history.

Edie Smith is the newest member of the Riverview High School Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame. A Florida native, originally from Panama City, FL, Edie comes from a family of teachers, her three sisters all teachers. She is a graduate of Bay County High School and later Troy State University where she received her BS degree in English/Journalism/History. While at Troy she was editor of the college newspaper for two years and a member of the Judicial branch of student government. She later received her Master’s degree in English Literature from the University of South Florida. During her tenure as a high school teacher in Sarasota County, she also served as an adjunct professor in the English Department at USF and Manatee Community College.

 Edie became a member of the RHS staff in the English Department in 1978. Being a firm believer in teaching the “whole child,” in addition to teaching full loads of English classes, Edie took on the challenge of sponsoring three extra curricular activities while at RHS.She sponsored the Junior Board, which was responsible for the

Junior-Senior Prom, Academic Olympics, and the Tri Hi Y girls service club. Tri Hi Y won the Sarasota Herald Tribune’s Golden Gavel Award for community service six years in a row under her sponsorship.

 In 1985 Edie was named Florida’s Teacher of the Year. This honor allowed her to be an active member of the National Commission on Education, taking her on speaking engagements throughout the U.S., and a position on the National Speaker’s Forum on Education. In 1986 she was named One of Florida’s Most Interesting People. As a result of this honor,she became the moderator for Sarasota County’s Education Network weekly shows spotlighting schools in the county. When NASA wanted a teacher in space, Edie applied and was one of the two Florida finalists. 

 Edie is a 42 year member of the Delta Kappa Gamma International Society for Key Women Educators, serving as Florida’s president from 1993-95 as well as being on the Society’s International Executive Board those two years. She was also instrumental in helping develop the Society’s Leadership Seminar for its members

 Edie has been married to her husband Larry for 61 years. Their children, Deanna and Christopher, are Sarasota High School and Florida State University graduates, and they, along with husband Larry, continue to be her biggest supporters.
